Expectations for Preparing for Your Visit

As NUNM is a teaching institution, you will be attended first by our Primary Intern students.  These are our senior Naturopathic or Chinese medical students.  Your student Interns will be devoted to your medical concerns, and serve as your main contact with the supervising Provider. Your student Interns are responsible for gathering your data, discussing your medical history, collecting vital measurements of your health, and holding space to hear your concerns about your conditions and potential treatment plans.  The primary Intern will then discuss your case with their overseeing Provider and Resident team.

Next, the supervising Provider and/or shift Resident will join you in the treatment room to discuss possible diagnosis, lab testing, or referral needs, and options for treatment.  We pride ourselves on building collaborative care plans while acknowledging the potential challenges you may face.

Rules, Policies, and Procedures to Be Aware Of

If you’re a new patient to NUNM Health Centers, or if we haven’t seen you in more than 3 years, we will need a complete our New Patient Forms.

Missed Appointment Policy

We will be happy to reschedule your appointment for a time that is more convenient for you. This time has been reserved for you, and your health care is important to us. To avoid being charged for missed appointments, call the Scheduling Line — 503.552.1551 — at least 24 hours in advance. Repeat missed appointments could result in being discharged from our practice.

What to Expect at Our Health Centers

As a patient at NUNM Health Centers, you will work with a team of practitioners and students who collaborate with you to design the ideal health plan for you. You benefit from the seasoned expertise of an attending faculty member, the recently gained knowledge of a resident, and the enthusiasm and work ethic of a senior medical student. Your wishes and desires are always held utmost regard in the process, with a goal of focusing on your immediate concerns while keeping an eye to maximizing your wellness.

Since learning and teaching are taking place along with caring for you, appointment times at our clinics can be one to two hours in length. You should plan accordingly to allow for a thorough analysis of your health.

Appointments are accompanied by a team of providers – typically two students, an attending practitioner and sometimes a resident physician. Your primary contact and communication will be with your “primary” or “intern,” a senior naturopathic or Chinese medical student. The student will gather information about your current health concerns and health history. They will then confer with the supervising practitioner to decide upon next steps, which may include further history, physical exams, labs, imaging, etc. Your treatment plan will be discussed in detail with you, offering the opportunity to ask questions along the way.

Primary Care

At NUNM, we utilize a team-based care model. Each primary care provider at NUNM is part of the Red, Blue, or Purple Care Team. If you receive primary care at NUNM, your primary care doctor’s care team is responsible for meeting your health care needs in the case that your primary care provider is unavailable. This model increases your access to care, and improves the quality of the care that you receive. To view our care teams and providers in more depth, you can visit this link
